SERMON REFLECTION

“Abide in Christ” is a phrase that gets used in Christian circles to the point of being a cliché. Clichés come from somewhere: there is an important history behind them. Their problem is that overuse has caused them to lose their original meaning and power. I fear this has happened with “abiding in Christ.”

Abiding in Christ means to remain dependent on Him and faithfully obedient to Him. Jesus specifically said that our faithful obedience must be expressed in our love for one another. I am trying to be consistent about asking the Lord to help me abide (that’s the dependence part). I am asking Him to make me aware of opportunities to be obedient and loving. I am asking for the strength to respond well to those opportunities.

PRAYER PROMPTS

How to pray for FBC

I am sad that I have to miss the upcoming Family Movie Night. Ann and I need to be in Dallas that night. I love that we are starting to do church-wide events like this on a more regular basis. It is part of getting us connected as family. Please pray for the event to go well. Pray for good weather. Pray that the Lord uses this opportunity to build new friendships.

How to pray for our Community

There were four domestic violence murders in East Texas last week. They occurred less than 36 hours apart. Domestic violence is a serious problem in our community. There will be over 1000 domestic violence cases reported to police in Longview, Kilgore, Gladewater and White Oak this year, assuming the pattern of the past few years hold true. Also assuming patterns hold true, this will be a small fraction of the actual cases. Please pray for an end to domestic violence in our community.

Statistically speaking, one of three women reading this blog is either a victim of domestic violence or is close to someone who is a victim. If you know someone who needs help, they can reach the Women’s Center 24 hours a day at (800) 441-5555. I serve on their board. They are a good organization.

How to Pray for Our World

Sunday’s Missions Moment featured Lee and Laurinda Erickson. They serve with The Seed Company, a part of Wycliffe Bible Translators. The Ericksons shared about the many translations project they support throughout Asia. They needed to be vague about the locations because of the risks many of the translators take to translate the Bible. Pray for the completion of these translations in Asia. Pray for the safety of the translators. Pray for wisdom for the Ericksons as they provide financial oversight to these projects.
