For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. —Isa. 9: 6

Mary and Joseph

“… he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The church’s central theme this Advent Season will be “His Name Shall be…” The theme is based on Isaiah 9:6, which gives four titles for the Messiah: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counselor referred to a king’s ability to rule wisely. Jesus is the wise ruler over all creation. He is the wise ruler over our lives. Wise rule means that he is our protector, leader, guide, and sovereign.

Mighty God reminds us that Jesus is more than a display of the Father’s character. Jesus is fully God. If you want to know what makes our heavenly Father grieve, look at Jesus. If you want to know what makes our heavenly father rejoice, look at Jesus.

Everlasting Father is the most awkward title of the four. Jesus is not God the Father; he is God the Son. But as the Son, Jesus shows us what the Father is like. He displays the care, protection, and guidance we expect from the Father.

Prince of Peace is an amazing title. Peace in the Bible is not just about the absence of conflict. Peace means thriving. It means flourishing in relationships with God and man. It is thriving in the midst of a fallen, broken world. Peace is gift only God can give.

My prayer for each of us is that this Christmas we will experience the Lord’s wise rule, we will know God better through his Son, we will feel his comfort, and be settled by his peace.

Give 1 Gift and Light Up Christmas at South Ward Advent ProjectGive Up 1 Gift?  South Ward Project

What is “Give Up 1 Gift” all about? Our own Rebeca Cooper is the principal at South Ward School! Thank you, God, for placing her there to make a difference in the lives of some very needy kids!  When talking about how our church could help the kids, Rebeca told us, “Christmas was not a very happy time around here.” So we have accepted Pastor Todd’s challenge to give up one of our own Christmas gifts in order to “Light Up Christmas” at South Ward.

Please visit the 5 Christmas trees in the foyer – you’ll see that they are empty and unlighted. For $5, you can purchase an ornament to place on the tree. Each ornament represents one gift for one child, which we are purchasing in bulk so that each child in each grade will receive the same gift from their friends at Fellowship.  When there are enough ornaments for all the students in that grade, we will light up the tree.  Please help us share the joy of Christmas.  — Ginny DeBoer
