Hello Friends!

Here is your Fellowship Focus Newsletter for August 2020.

God is Present

The FBC Book Club just finished reading The Practice of the Presence of God. I am using this club to introduce people to some of the classics of the Christian Faith. The Practice of the Presence of God was written by a 17th century monk named Brother Lawrence. On the surface, his life appears to have nothing in common with life today. Yet he is a powerful example for Christians today. What made this 17th century monk so remarkable was his grasp of the reality that God is present with us all the time. It is an awareness I want to grow in my walk with the Lord.

I am talking about more than the vague sense that “God is everywhere, so of course He must be with me.” I am talking about the vivid awareness that God is at work in every moment of your life. Every moment. All of them. Actively working with the focus and care of an artist. Brother Lawrence would not start the simplest of tasks or begin a conversation without first silently praying. He acknowledged his dependence on God and committed the task or conversation to God’s glory. He immediately repented of his sin and then moved on with complete confidence in God’s forgiveness. He looked for opportunities throughout his day to thank God and offer praise to Him. His mind automatically used any free moment to think about God.

Can you picture that kind of intimacy with God? It is the life with God that I long for. It is the life God longs to have with each of us. The way I am following Brother Lawrence’s example is in my throughout-the-day prayer life. More and more, I do not start a task or a conversation, walk into the store, or send a text without first acknowledging that I depend completely on God to glorify Him in that moment. I’m far from consistent, but it’s getting better. Join me in pursuing a deeper awareness of what is true: God is present with you always.

We will keep you updated as guidelines and requirements are announced for our city and county. Check back at LONGVIEWFBC.COM and make sure to sign up for the MIDWEEK MOMENT from Pastor Todd.

Life Groups Starting Up September 13!

Praise God! On Sunday, September 13, we will resume adult Life Groups during the 9AM hour. However, due to the COVID crisis, there will be a couple of big changes.

The first change is that each classroom will be strictly limited in its capacity. We’ll have the chairs spaced 6 feet apart to comply with social distancing guidelines. Of course, if a couple attends a Life Group together, they can sit close to each other and the same goes for any two (or more) people from the same household.

The social distancing requirement leads to the second change. You’ll need to sign up for the Life Group you plan to attend since seating will be so limited.

We’re also going to explore a live video option for the classes so that people who need to stay home can participate.

A list of classes that are being offered will be coming soon along with the signup, so stay tuned!

The final change is unrelated to COVID and is relatively minor. Life Groups will be scheduled to end at 10:00 am instead of 10:10 am from now on. This allows people who volunteer in other areas during the second hour the freedom to be on time to serve without having to leave while Lifegroup is still going. And it gives everyone else more flexible fellowship time between Life Group and the 10:30am gathering.

That’s all for now – may the Lord Jesus bless you with his grace!
