Who is Like God?
Our theme in 2018 is “Heart Matters.” We are looking at who God is and how He invites us to respond to Him from our deepest core. The more we know who God is, the more our hearts are captured by Him. That makes Micah a fascinating book to study this Fall. The name Micah means, “Who is like God?” In the book of Micah, “Who is like God” is a statement of praise – no one is like God. It is also a question that haunts the book. The nation of Israel was split in two – the northern kingdom (still called Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah). Both kingdoms faced international threats. Worse, they were filled by political, social and religious corruption as the people turned away from God. The book of Micah is a collection of sermons that speak against their rampant corruption. But the book doesn’t just say, “stop sinning.” It gets to the heart. The people turned away from God because they were turning to something else. They sinned because they desired money, power, and prestige more than they desired God. In other words, their problem was idolatry. The question, “Who is like God” is a way of pointing out that none of the things that they put in God’s place could compare with Him. It is a timely message for us, as well.
An Exciting New Staff Position
I am excited to announce that Jordan Johnson will join FBC’s staff on a full-time basis starting in January. Jordan has been serving as a part-time intern, leading the Junior High since January 1, 2015. Jordan will continue working with the Junior High, as well as helping Slade with the Senior High. This will free up Slade to assist with other pastoral duties in the church. Jordan grew up in the Youth Group and has had tremendous mentors at FBC over the years. This includes Slade, former youth leaders, but especially his dad. Jordan has long dreamed of serving FBC full-time in the Youth Ministry. We are blessed to have more of him.
Family Dedication Celebration
Sunday, October 7, will be a special Family Dedication Celebration at Fellowship. On this special day, we will bear witness with our families as they dedicate themselves to faithfully nurture and teach their little ones about the Lord. We will also commit to join with them in that faithful responsibility, as a community of faith. If you have a new addition to your family and would like to participate in this dedication, please contact the office by Monday, September 24, so that we can arrange the details. You are welcome to invite extended family to this special event as well. 1st through 6th Graders will join their families in the 10:30 worship service on this Sunday as well. It will be a great time for our children to participate in communion and observe as families dedicate their babies to God.
