Saying Thanks for Grace
I came across a definition of grace from Dallas Willard that has helped me: Grace is God working in you to accomplish what you cannot do on your own. I like this definition because it explains what is going on with grace. The common definition that grace is undeserved favor doesn’t explain what God actually does when He extends grace. Grace is God’s work to bring us to Him and make us like His Son, which is beyond our efforts.
I viewed grace growing up as a step away from being passive. That is because I didn’t think of forgiveness as doing anything beyond choosing to ignore my sins. This definition brings into focus that grace is God at work. He actively makes up for the limitations of my fallenness. He does this by pursuing me, first by sending Jesus, then by the Holy Spirit drawing me to the Lord. He continues to pursue me and transform me into Christlikeness, which I cannot do on my own.
This is going to be my Thanksgiving focus. I am grateful to the Lord that He accomplishes in me what I cannot accomplish on my own. There is nothing greater over which to give thanks.
