The Pentateuch

Todd Malone

If you have never read the first five books of the Old Testament (the Pentateuch), you are in for a shock. You will shake your head in amazement. The people in the Old Testament are raw. They make horrible decisions. They commit the worst sins you can think of. They are self-centered, fail to trust God, make God’s enemies their friends, and enjoy their sin. Many of the stories will disturb you, but they will keep you transfixed.

There is no question that other parts of the Pentateuch can be tedious. That’s especially true when you get to the detailed design and building instructions, or the genealogies, or the rules about issues we can’t relate to. You wonder why God cares enough about some of these things to put them in the Bible.

Here’s what’s fascinating – the shocking parts and the tedious parts fit together. From the Bible’s earliest pages, God works His plan for rescuing humanity from sin so they can be in relationship with Him. His plan involves creating a people out of the very broken humanity He would save. This people are to reflect His character to the nations around them. They are to tell those nations about God. God takes sinful, messed up people just like us and uses them.

Ask yourself if the people described in the Pentateuch are the ones you would pick to complete this assignment. Pay attention to how often you see God’s grace in using broken people in His plans.  It will encourage you that if God can do such amazing things through these people, He can use you. When you read a genealogy, read it as a reminder of God’s unwavering, long-term faithfulness to His people. When you read the laws or the details about building the Tabernacle, think of it as the way God graciously prepared and preserved His people for a relationship with Him.

The Pentateuch takes us into a world vastly different from ours. Yet we see God doing the same work there that He wants to do at FBC. He wants to prepare and unleash His people to share Him with the world. He wants to live in relationship with us. He will show the same long-term faithfulness to you that you will see in the Pentateuch.

456 Retreat! May 10-12

This year’s 456 Retreat will be in Winnsboro, TX. Our speaker will be Mr. Jordan Johnson speaking about Storytelling Scriptures. 456 Clubbers will enjoy games, scripture – a great time with the Lord and each other.  Eat before you come on Friday, as no dinner will be served.

We would love for our Fellowship family to lift up all the clubbers and chaperones for this trip, as well as Jordan as he speaks to the kids. Pray for spiritual growth and understanding, and bonding as a group. Pray that God will begin raising up a new generation of spirit filled leaders and followers of Jesus through this weekend!

Nursery Positions Available!

Love kids and looking for a place to serve at Fellowship?
The nursery is looking to fill a few positions. One is a teacher for the 1st hour in the toddler room as a substitute while our regular teacher is out. This is a paid position.

We are also looking for volunteers to work at the front desk in the nursery. This position supports the parents as they check in and the teachers so they can stay in the classroom.

Coming to our Faith@Home Center, Faith Paths. An intentional faith map for families to guide their kids spiritual formation.

Every step along the Faith Path is intended to guide and direct your child toward becoming a fully developing follower of Jesus Christ. At some point along the way, your child will be mature enough to make a clear decision to trust Christ as his or her Savior and then follow the Lord in believer’s baptism. We have material available to assist you in leading your child to Christ and understanding salvation. When that wonderful event occurs, we would love to provide you with a special Salvation & Baptism kit containing resources to help you celebrate.

The first step along this journey as a family is the PARENT DEDICATION. This is what we will be doing May 12 during the Family Dedication ceremony that will take place during the worship service.  The parents will commit to raise their children in a Christ centered home.

Check out the Parent Dedication material available May 12th at the Faith@Home Center by the Nursery in the Worship Center foyer.

Opportunities to serve at Fellowship

We believe finding a place to use your gifts in service to others in the body is an essential part of being part of the Fellowship community of faith. Each month in the Focus, we will highlight various serving opportunities. Find the one that fits your gifts and plug in!

The Greeters Ministry

Turning guests into friends, and friends into family!

Our Sunday morning Greeters Ministry is a very important part of what we do!

For first time guests, it’s an opportunity to help them feel comfortable in a new environment, and get  connected in Life Groups, as well as Youth and Kids’ Classes for their family. It’s really a way to say “We are glad you are here!” in a meaningful way.

For the Fellowship community, it’s an opportunity to get to know each other as family. As we share with each other, we find opportunities to encourage one another and bear one another’s burdens. Plus it’s just nice to be seen and known by name!

We are always looking for outgoing individuals and families (yes, your kids can participate too!) who would like to join us in the foyer meeting, greeting and connecting on Sunday mornings.

If you have been looking for a place to serve, and think this might be your place, let’s talk! Contact Ralph and Patsy Richards at or (903) 918-3870.

Thank You

Your thoughts and prayers were felt by us all. These prayers blessed us greatly.

The plant arangement is absolutely gorgeous and will serve as a reminder of dad and of an amazing church family.

Thanks are not enough but… Thank you
